Buffalo Sabres fans spent Friday morning talking about one name and one drum. The rumor moving around was that Ryan Miller would handle the pregame honors before Game 2 against the Montreal Canadiens.
The chatter began after local TV producer Michael Loffredo posted on social media that he had heard Miller would bang the drum tonight before the game, adding the familiar chant, “Let’s go Buffalo!” It was the kind of pregame tidbit that can spread fast in Buffalo, where the drum tradition opens every home game and the team usually does not say in advance who will be behind it.
If Miller did take the drum, the moment would carry more weight than a normal ceremonial nod. Buffalo drafted him in the fifth round of the 1999 NHL Draft, and he spent his first 11 NHL seasons with the Sabres, winning 284 games in goal for the team. His Buffalo run included a 2009-10 season in which he went 41-18-8, won the Vezina Trophy and posted a 92.9 save percentage with a 2.22 goals against average. In Buffalo overall, he had a 91.6 save percentage and a 2.60 goals against average.
That is why the rumor landed the way it did on Friday. Miller is 45 years old and has not played in the NHL since 2021, when his career ended after stints with the Blues, Canucks and Ducks. Even now, he remains identified with Buffalo more than any other stop, and the idea of him leading the chant before a playoff game fit the emotional pull of a fan base that still treats him as one of its defining goalies.
William Fichtner handled the drum honors for Game 1 against the Canadiens, but the Sabres do not generally announce the next drummer beforehand. That leaves room for surprise, and for the sort of rumor that can take on a life of its own before puck drop. Whether Miller ends up at the drum or not, the buzz around his name shows how much weight his Buffalo years still carry when the Sabres are back on a big stage.
