Two were placed on secure hold Tuesday morning after a shooting in the area of Leinbach Park at Sally Kirk Road in Winston-Salem, police said. and were among the schools locked down as officers responded to the scene.

The said the incident began as a fight around 9:52 a.m. and escalated to a shooting while officers were en route. Police said the initial investigation suggested it was a planned fight involving several young people, and that multiple people were shooting at one another.

Police said there were multiple victims and that suspects remained on the run. Officers were using drones in the area to try to find the people involved, and authorities said the incident remained active.

The response matters because the police account points to a fast-moving, organized confrontation rather than a random burst of violence. With two schools on secure hold and suspects still missing, the immediate question is whether officers can find everyone involved before the area clears and students move back into normal routines.
