has launched a new quantum computing effort aimed at breaking what it sees as one of the field’s main bottlenecks, and the work could ripple into the companies investors track under ionq stock. The program, called , or HARQ, is designed to move quantum systems beyond a single-technology model and toward machines built from different kinds of qubits working together.

, DARPA’s program manager, said the agency is asking the field to move away from a “one-qubit-to-rule-them-all” mindset. He said different qubit technologies each bring distinct strengths, but no single approach can deliver everything needed for large-scale, high-performance quantum systems. HARQ will try to define what a truly heterogeneous quantum architecture looks like and develop the interconnects that make those systems possible.

DARPA said 19 performer teams from 15 organizations will take part in one of two parallel workstreams, with collaboration centered on technical interchange and co-design efforts over the next 24 months. Seventeen of the 19 teams are already under contract, while two remain in negotiation. The agency said it will update the announcement once those remaining agreements are signed.

The program arrives at a moment when most quantum development still revolves around a single type of qubit, a structure DARPA says limits the field’s ability to scale. The agency compared the new model to classical computing, where specialized processors such as CPUs, GPUs and ASICs are used for different jobs rather than asking one chip to do everything. HARQ is meant to lay groundwork for larger-scale demonstrations and later investment in quantum infrastructure.

Cohen said that if the effort works, it could offer a much more efficient route to scaling quantum computing and open applications that are still out of reach today. The question now is whether the teams can turn the concept of mixed qubit systems into something that can be built, connected and expanded beyond the lab.
