says the breakout success of ’s has changed his life, even if he still sounds a little surprised to be talking about it at all. The actor, who plays Jack Abbot, an attending physician on the night shift, said he never imagined he would end up playing a doctor.

“It’s a lot. But these are great problems to have,” Hatosy said on the eve of season two’s finale, as he reflected on the attention that has followed the hit series. He has less screen time than his costars, but he has still emerged as a fan favorite, helped by a performance that earned him an last fall and by social posts that younger viewers have latched onto, including jokes about his great arm muscles and Quentin Tarantino.

The show’s reach has become part of the story around Hatosy as much as anything he has done on screen. Jack Abbot has been cast as a lawful-good counterpart to ’s increasingly polarizing Dr. Robby, and that contrast has helped make the character stand out in a crowded ensemble. Hatosy said the response has been intense, but also deeply meaningful. “It’s definitely changed my life,” he said.

That change has not come only from television. Hatosy said he has a long history of using social media, especially Twitter, as a creative outlet and a place to get writing thoughts out without treating it like a public performance. He said he does not try to take himself too seriously, but also acknowledged that the platform has become a harder place to navigate. “I try not to take myself too seriously, because I think there’s a lot of serious shit out there,” he said. “It is making me think differently about things and how to adapt.”

For Hatosy, the most striking part of the attention has been the effect on viewers who say the show changed how they think about medicine. He said it means a great deal when people tell him they are deciding to go to nursing school because of the series, adding, “I’m gonna go to nursing school. I wasn’t sure, but seeing you guys and how you portray these characters, it means so much to me.” That reaction gives The Pitt a weight that goes beyond its ratings, and it helps explain why his character has resonated so far beyond his limited screen time.

There is still an edge to the moment, though. The same social media that helped amplify Hatosy’s appeal is also the thing he says has changed the most, and not for the better. He described a darkness now hanging over it, a challenge he is still learning how to meet even as the show continues to build his profile. For a performer whose rise has come partly through a few sharp posts and a role that keeps landing with younger fans, the question now is not whether the attention will fade, but how long he can keep it feeling like an outlet rather than a burden.
