Kansas City Chiefs defensive backs coach Dave Merritt was arrested on Wednesday on suspicion of domestic battery. The criminal complaint identified the allegation as a Class B misdemeanor, but details about the arrest were not made available.
The Chiefs said Thursday afternoon they were aware of the arrest and had no further comment. Merritt is due in Johnson County District Court at 1:30 p.m. ET.
Merritt has been with the Chiefs for seven seasons as the defensive backs coach, giving him one of the longer tenures on the staff. His coaching career has spanned nearly three decades, including an 11-year stint with the New York Giants as a secondary and safeties coach.
The arrest puts a veteran assistant coach on the court calendar at a moment when the team has offered no public explanation beyond acknowledging the case. What comes next will depend on the hearing in Johnson County District Court and whatever the complaint and court filings make public there.
