Gabriel Diallo returns to Madrid on Day 3 of the ATP Mutua Madrid Open with a match he can win, facing Elmer Moller in the second round. Diallo reached his first Masters 1000 quarterfinal here last year, but this season has brought far fewer wins and a much tougher stretch.
That makes Madrid an important stop for the Canadian, because it is still the place where he first announced himself at this level. Moller had to come through qualifying to reach this stage, so the draw gives Diallo a clear chance to stop the skid and reset his season.
The same day brings other matches with more on the line. Lorenzo Musetti, the No. 4 seed, is defending semifinal points in Madrid, and an early exit would leave him vulnerable in the rankings. Hubert Hurkacz also looked sharp in his first round win, while Arthur Fils arrives off his title at the Barcelona Open last week and Tomas Martin Etcheverry is seeded in Madrid for the first time.
The clay does not forgive much in a short stretch, and several players are carrying different kinds of pressure into the second round. For gabriel diallo, though, the task is simple: take the opening Madrid once more and make it count before the draw gets harder.
