Simone Biles arrived at the 2026 Laureus World Sports Awards in Madrid on April 20 after being sewn into a feather-covered Cong Tri dress just minutes before stepping onto the red carpet. Her Instagram Stories had already given away the problem: the dress had “busted.”
The wardrobe mishap did not keep Biles off the carpet, and it did not stop her from doing the job she came to do. The 2025 Sportswoman of the Year returned to the Madrid soirée to present retired Romanian gymnast Nadia Comăneci with the Lifetime Achievement Award, turning a backstage scramble into a polished public appearance.
The look itself was built around a Cong Tri Fall 2025 mini dress styled by Marc Desir, who had worked with her husband, Jonathan Owens, at the 2025 Met Gala. The one-shoulder design used faux feathers crafted from ivory taffeta, fanning from Biles’s waist past the thigh-length hemline and into a train that brushed the carpet. She paired it with pointy pumps in nearly the same shade, a statement watch with a rose gold face and green croc-embossed band, a slim silver handchain, an itty-bitty yellow gold clutch, a three-carat oval-cut engagement ring and a matching anklet chain.
The feather effect fit a broader run of red-carpet looks that have leaned into plumage, even as designers keep finding ways to make it look lighter and less literal. The same month, Zendaya wore faux feathers in an Erdem Fall 2026 dress three weeks ago, while Demi Moore, Olivia Rodrigo and Rita Ora all wore feathered looks at the 2026 Vanity Fair Oscar Party. Emily Blunt later appeared in a Schiaparelli couture gown decorated with 25,000 silk feathers at the The Devil Wears Prada 2 NYC premiere, and Zendaya also wore a black-to-blue Schiaparelli design to The Drama premiere in NYC.
What could have been a fashion failure became a reminder of how quickly Biles can recover in public. Even with a busted dress and a last-minute fitting, she still made the carpet, and she still made it to the stage for Comăneci.
