Sarah Danh was flown back to the United States this week after a 24-hour emergency medical evacuation from Japan, where she became critically ill during her honeymoon. The labor and delivery nurse, who had been married only a week, remains on life support and in a coma in San Antonio.
Her uncle, Khang Le, said in a recent update that the family is still holding on. “We miss her more than words can express,” he said, adding, “Please continue to keep Sarah and our family in your thoughts and prayers.”
Danh’s sudden illness turned a trip meant to mark a new marriage into a medical crisis. She works at Methodist Stone Oak Hospital and is just one year into her nursing career, while Luke Gradl has remained by her side throughout the ordeal.
Family members say her toxic levels have begun to normalize, but doctors in San Antonio are still evaluating whether she may need a liver transplant. The cause of her acute liver failure remains unclear, and her condition is being watched closely after the long flight home.
Relatives from across the country have traveled to San Antonio to support the family, and a GoFundMe page has been set up to help cover medical expenses. For now, the honeymoon nightmare in Japan has ended in a hospital room, where Danh remains unconscious and the next major decision rests with her doctors.
