Payton Tolle gave Boston a reason to keep looking twice. The left-handed pitcher worked six innings of one-run ball against the rival Yankees, struck out 11 and walked away with a 50% strikeout rate in his only start versus New York.
That performance did not come out of nowhere. During spring camp, Tolle allowed just a.235 xwOBA, then followed with a 3.00 ERA and 2.49 FIP over 15 innings with Triple-A Worcester. He also ran a 31% strikeout rate and a 30% CSW rate in that stretch, numbers that point to a pitcher missing bats with real purpose rather than getting by on contact management.
For fantasy players scanning the waiver wire, the case is straightforward: Tolle looks like a premier pitching talent who has taken the next step forward in his development. The pitch mix has helped too, with a sinker, a refined changeup and a curveball working together to give him more than one way to finish at-bats. Against a lineup like New York, that mattered.
The larger problem for anyone trying to decide whether to add him is not the stuff. It is the timetable. Boston does not need to pretend one start erases the usual caution around a young arm, even one who just punched out 11 in six innings and has been backing it up with the kind of underlying numbers that tend to hold up. In a waiver context, though, that is often enough to act before the rest of the market catches up.
Tolle is not the only name worth tracking. Ildemaro Vargas has gone 25-for-70 for a.357 average with an elite.411 xwOBA and a 188 wRC+, while punching out at just a 12% clip and homering five times in 73 plate appearances in 2026. Braxton Ashcraft has posted a 2.43 ERA and 2.42 FIP with a 1.01 WHIP, a.198 batting average against and a 28% strikeout rate. Carlos Cortes has been even louder at the plate, slashing.339/.403/.625 with a 181 wRC+, six walks, four strikeouts, a 15% barrel rate and a.451 xwOBA. Walbert Ureña has added a 26% strikeout rate and a 2.48 FIP.
That is the shape of the waiver pool right now: one high-upside arm and several hitters or pitchers who have made a case with performance, not reputation. Tolle’s outing against the Yankees is the sort that changes where he sits on the board the next time a fantasy manager opens the app.
