A crew member fell overboard from the early Sunday morning about 12 miles off the coast of Wellfleet, Massachusetts, as the cruise ship headed back to Boston from a 7-day round trip to Bermuda. The missing worker had not been identified by Monday morning.

The ship, which carries around 4,000 passengers, triggered a ship-wide man overboard announcement and launched lifeboats immediately after the fall was reported. Security cameras captured images of the worker going overboard, and multiple teams, including a search helicopter, reached the area around 1:15 a.m. ET to help in the search.

Passengers aboard the Norwegian Breakaway said they were told the vessel was staying in search-and-rescue mode through the night and into the early morning, which delayed the start of embarkation in Boston. The ship returned to Black Falcon Terminal just before noon on Sunday, while the Coast Guard suspended the search just after noon pending new information.

The timing underscored the strain on the vessel’s final leg home. The cruise line told passengers that the ship remained engaged in search and rescue efforts overnight and into the early morning hours, and that those efforts required the vessel’s full attention before the voyage could safely resume toward Boston.

, a passenger, said the announcement was deeply upsetting. “It's very heartbreaking. [Sunday] morning they ended up saying that someone went over, a crew went over the ledge,” she said. Durandisse said she was lying in bed and drifting off to sleep when a light woke her, adding, “And then I heard some loud noises.”

The episode left one basic fact unchanged by Monday morning: the missing crew member remained unidentified, and the search was on hold until authorities received new information. For the people on board, the ship’s return to port did not close the story so much as mark the point where the immediate emergency gave way to the harder question of what happens next.
