The Top 7 on American Idol turned April 27 into Taylor Swift night, with viewers holding the vote as the live episode pushed two singers toward elimination. The remaining contestants performed songs from Swift’s catalogue while the show also saluted California’s biggest artists throughout the night.
By the end of the episode, the two singers with the lowest vote totals were set to go home, leaving five contestants to move on to the next week. That made every performance matter in real time, with american idol voting deciding more than applause ever could.
Jordan McCullough opened one of the night’s most recognizable turns with Swift’s first-ever single, “Tim McGraw,” a song from her 2006 debut album. Chris Tungseth took on “Exile,” the Swift and Bon Iver collaboration from 2020’s Folklore, while Hannah Harper played banjo on “Mean,” Swift’s Grammy-winning hit. Brooks Rosser also performed “Love Story,” another key song from Swift’s early run.
The judging panel added another layer to the live format, with Nikki Glaser joining Luke Bryan, Carrie Underwood and Lionel Richie for the evening. Richie praised McCullough’s performance by saying, “That is the way to put barbecue sauce on Taylor Swift,” then added, “I am telling you, that was so well done.” Underwood called one performance “beautiful on everything” and highlighted “the tender quality,” while Glaser said, “I am so grateful I just got to hear you sing live. It feels like a real privilege to listen to you.” She also said, “I got goosebumps throughout the entire performance.” Bryan told another singer, “You had me focused and locked in,” and later urged, “Just force yourself to always give more energy.”
The mix of Swift songs, live voting and a reduced field gave the April 27 episode its edge. It was not just a tribute hour. It was a cutdown round, and the audience’s votes were set to decide which five singers survived Taylor Swift night.
