Patrice Lair said he will not stay with Deportivo Toluca Fútbol Club once the Clausura 2026 ends, putting a date on a departure that the club, he said, has known about for some time. He made the announcement after Toluca Femenil beat Tigres 2-1 in the first leg of the quarterfinals on Thursday, a win that leaves the team in position to keep pushing through the postseason.
The French coach said he wants to take Toluca as far as the semifinals and then the final before his time on the bench is over. That leaves the club chasing a title run with a manager already on his way out, even as the team protected a 2-1 advantage against one of the league’s most demanding opponents.
The result was built on a comeback. Toluca Femenil trailed before Eugénie Le Sommer scored one goal and Faustine Robert added another to turn the match around against Tigres. By the end of the first leg, Toluca had taken a 2-1 lead in the Clausura 2026 quarterfinal series and given itself a real chance to advance.
Lair arrived at Toluca Femenil for the start of Apertura 2025 and has now coached 37 matches with the club, posting 20 wins, eight draws and seven losses after Thursday’s game. His spell has already included one strong regular season, when Toluca finished fourth in the Apertura 2025 table with 35 points from 17 jornadas, followed by a quarterfinal exit against Chivas in a 2-4 aggregate loss.
That history is what gives his announcement weight now. Toluca are again in the middle of a playoff run, again among the teams with a legitimate path forward, and again trying to turn a promising first leg into something lasting. This time, though, the run comes with the knowledge that the current cycle under Lair has a fixed end.
There is also a broader roster question hanging over the club. International reports have linked Le Sommer and Robert with possible departures after Clausura 2026, but those reports were not presented as fact. For Toluca, that means the playoff stretch is unfolding against a backdrop of possible changes well beyond the touchline.
Lair’s message was plain: he is aiming to finish the job as far as he can, but the next chapter will not be his. For Toluca Femenil, the task now is to decide whether this postseason becomes the high point of his tenure or the last strong result before a transition begins.
