Scottie Scheffler is absent from the field for the 2026 Truist Championship, a PGA Tour Signature event being played next week at Quail Hollow, while Rory McIlroy is scheduled to join the field. The tournament carries a $20 million purse and comes one week before the 2026 PGA Championship.
McIlroy’s return to Quail Hollow gives the event a familiar headliner. He has won there four times, and his record at the course now sits alongside the momentum of a season in which he completed the Grand Slam, winning his sixth major at Augusta National this year.
The timing matters because the Truist Championship sits in a narrow window before one of golf’s biggest stages, and Scheffler’s absence leaves a notable gap in a loaded field. McIlroy, meanwhile, has already said he wants to focus on the bigger events, the four major championships and the Ryder Cup, while stretching out his career and prioritizing tournaments he considers more relevant than others.
That shift has been building for some time. McIlroy had not played a tournament leading up to Augusta National after an injury at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, and he has already talked about toning down his PGA Tour schedule in favor of longevity. On his official website, he is listed to play next week, giving him a confirmed start before the PGA Championship arrives.
McIlroy described completing the Grand Slam as the destination he wanted to reach, but said he is still competitive and has plenty left to give. He added that it took time to reframe his goals and think about what comes next, a view that fits the season he has just put together and the schedule he now appears ready to shape on his own terms.
