Joel Embiid came back from appendix surgery on April 26 and gave Philadelphia one more push in a postseason that had already asked plenty of him. He scored 26 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and handed out six assists in Game 4, but the 76ers still lost to the Boston Celtics 128-96 and fell behind 3-1 in the series.
That return came just 17 days after Embiid had an appendectomy on April 9, with the 76ers trying to keep their season alive around a player whose body has rarely cooperated with his talent. He went 9 of 21 from the field in Game 4, a night that showed both the lift he can provide and how far Philadelphia still had to go.
Embiid answered three nights later. In Game 5, he scored 33 points, pulled down four rebounds and added eight assists as Philadelphia beat Boston 113-97. He also visited the locker room after tweaking his left knee in the third quarter, a reminder that every step of his return carries a cost.
The season had already been shaped by that reality. At the end of the 2024-25 season, Embiid had arthroscopic surgery on his left knee. He reported to camp last fall a little slimmer and came back under minute restrictions and limits on back-to-backs. By January, he was averaging nearly 30 points per game, but most of March was lost to an oblique strain. Then came early April, when appendicitis sent him to emergency surgery while the team was on the road in Houston.
The 76ers still found enough around him to survive the first round of the play-in race and claim the seventh seed in the Eastern Conference. Tyrese Maxey and rookie VJ Edgecombe led Philadelphia through that stretch, giving Embiid a chance to rejoin a team that had not completely collapsed without him. He then cooked Nikola Vucevic and Neemias Queta in the third and fourth quarters of Game 5, the kind of burst that can still tilt a game even when the rest of his season has been a fight for each appearance.
That is the story of Embiid as much as any box score line: the production is still there, and so is the fragility. Philadelphia has spent years planning around his long-term preservation, but the playoffs keep pulling him back into the center of everything, where his presence can change a game and his health can change a series.
