For the Cubs, that creates a clear path to banking another start from a pitcher whose surface line has been ugly but whose strikeout and contact numbers suggest sharper work is ahead, especially with the offense behind him continuing to put pressure on opposing staffs.
Boyd’s situation also fits the broader Cubs picture. The club’s bats have been carrying the lineup since April 10, and that kind of scoring cushion can help a starter weather early traffic while he works through the kind of variance that has hit him in the opening weeks. The one question Sunday is whether the road split that has dogged the Diamondbacks can finally show up in the matchup, or whether Boyd’s inflated ERA keeps masking the version of him that his underlying numbers point to.
