Mike White said a rumor about Jennifer Coolidge and The White Lotus was true, telling Jimmy Fallon that part of the HBO series grew out of a two-week safari he took with the actor. White made the remark while appearing on The Tonight Show to promote his return to Survivor.
Fallon asked White whether the idea behind The White Lotus or parts of it came from a trip he took with Coolidge, and White did not dodge the question. “It is, yeah, it is true,” he said. White added that he and Coolidge slept in the same bed during the safari trip, and said, “She is like the funniest person.”
White said Coolidge “veered a little on paranoid” during the trip and recalled her looking at lions and thinking they were looking back at her. “So we'd go out and she'd be like, 'Wow, look at that pack of lions!' And then she'd be like, 'Do you see how they're looking at us? I know that look. We got to get out of here. I'm not kidding. We got to get out of here,'” he said. Watching her react to the animals, White said, “I know whatever I've done with my life, and I'm here watching her freak out about these lions, I've done something right.”
The exchange lands with extra weight because The White Lotus has already moved from Hawaii to Sicily to Thailand since 2021, keeping viewers guessing about where the next season may go. White’s safari story now gives a public origin point for one of the show’s stranger inspirations and keeps Africa in the conversation as a possible next setting. He did not set a destination on the show’s future, but he did make clear that the Coolidge trip was real, and that it stuck with him.
