Thermos recalls 8.2 million food jars and bottles after stopper injuries

has recalled about 8.2 million Stainless King food jars and bottles after reports that a stopper can forcefully eject when the container is opened. The hazard can cause serious impact injuries and lacerations, and the company said three consumers suffered permanent vision loss after being struck in the eye.

The recall covers about 5.8 million Stainless King Food Jars and about 2.3 million Sportsman Food & Beverage Bottles sold in a range of colors in 16-oz, 24-oz, and 40-oz sizes. The Thermos trademark is printed on the side of the product, while the model numbers are on the bottom.

The recalled Food Jars include models SK3000 and SK3020, which were manufactured before July 2023. The recalled bottle is model SK3010. Thermos said it has received 27 reports of consumers who were struck by a stopper that ejected upon opening, with injuries that required medical attention.

Consumers should stop using the recalled Food Jars and Bottles immediately. For SK3000 and SK3020 Food Jars, Thermos is asking customers to throw away the stopper and send a photo of the disposed stopper to the company to receive a free replacement pressure relief stopper. For SK3010 Bottles, consumers should return the recalled bottle using a prepaid shipping label to get a replacement bottle.

The problem shows up when perishable food or beverages sit in the container for an extended period of time. The recalled products use stoppers without a pressure relief in the center, which can allow pressure to build before the lid is opened. That is what makes the recall urgent now: the danger is tied not just to the product, but to how long it has been stored.

The question for consumers is not whether the jars and bottles were sold in many colors or sizes. It is whether any Thermos container in the kitchen carries one of the recalled model numbers and has a stopper that could turn an ordinary opening into an injury. For anyone who owns one of these products, the answer is to stop using it today.
