The move affects the Kindle 1st Generation, Kindle DX, Kindle DX Graphite, Kindle Keyboard, Kindle 4, Kindle Touch, Kindle 5 and Kindle Paperwhite 1st Generation, along with the Kindle Fire 1st Generation, Kindle Fire 2nd Generation, Kindle Fire HD 7 and Kindle Fire HD 8.9. Amazon is offering customers a 20% discount on one of its newer Kindle models and a $20 e-book credit if they buy a replacement by June 20.

The company said the devices being phased out have been supported for at least 14 years, and in some cases as long as 18 years, adding that technology has moved on sharply since then. That matters because Kindles are built to last and to do very little beyond reading, which is why many people keep the same model for years. Some staffers have used their Kindles for more than a decade, a reminder that this is not a normal gadget refresh cycle.

The support cutoff also points to a familiar tension in consumer tech: the hardware may still turn on, but the software and security environment around it may no longer be viable. Security expert said there may be hardware-specific vulnerabilities that cannot be fixed with software, making credits and trade-up offers easier than trying to patch older devices one by one.
