The Los Angeles Angels and New York Yankees met Tuesday, April 14, in the second game of their series, and the pitching numbers pointed toward a narrow edge for the home side. Reid Detmers entered with a 2.53 xERA through three starts, while Ryan Weathers carried a 5.12 xERA into the matchup.
That gap was not small. Detmers’ 2.53 xERA ranked in the top 15% of baseball through those three starts, and his chase rate sat in the 95th percentile this year. Weathers’ 5.12 xERA, by contrast, sat in the bottom 25th percentile, a profile that invites trouble if the contact starts to pile up.
Chris framed it the simplest way possible: the Angels had a pitching advantage here and that made them worth backing. He also described the difference as one between a top-third starter and a pitcher who was essentially bridging the rotation until health returned. In other words, the bet leaned less on reputation than on how each arm had actually performed.
That mattered because the matchup came with a set of opposing traits that could decide whether the game stayed tight or opened up. The Yankees had shown more patience at the plate this season, but they also carried plenty of swing-and-miss in the lineup. Detmers worked with a fastball-heavy approach, and the Yankees had been the best fastball-hitting team in baseball year-to-date.
There was also some history on Los Angeles’ side. The Angels had won three of the last five head-to-head matchups with the Yankees, and Mike Trout, Zach Neto and Jo Adell each had more than 40 plate appearances against Weathers with top 20% wOBA production over that sample. That gave the Angels a second path to an edge if Weathers’ command slipped early.
The tension in the number was regression. Chris said Weathers’ pending negative regression played an influential role in the case for Los Angeles, and that was the sharpest warning sign in the preview. The Yankees could still make the matchup awkward with their patience and power, but on paper Detmers looked like the more stable starter and the cleaner side of the wager. That is usually enough to matter before first pitch, and it was enough here.
