Thierry Henry said Lamine Yamal’s confidence and production after Barcelona’s Champions League defeat to Atletico Madrid reminded him of a young Cristiano Ronaldo. Henry’s praise came after the 18-year-old scored four minutes into the second leg at the Metropolitano, with Barcelona still trying to overturn a two-goal deficit on aggregate.
Yamal’s strike briefly lifted hopes of a comeback, and Ferran Torres later levelled the tie on aggregate for Barcelona, but the visitors still went out 3-2 on aggregate after Atletico held firm. Eric Garcia was sent off late, and Barcelona’s night ended with another European setback that left them without a clean sheet for a 15th consecutive Champions League match.
Henry said Yamal had talked boldly before the match and then backed it up almost immediately. “This is what a young Cristiano Ronaldo used to do: he could talk boldly in interviews and back it up on the pitch,” Henry said, adding that Yamal had promised to carry Barcelona single-handedly and had scored barely two minutes into the game. He said what impressed him most was the teenager’s fearlessness, his willingness to demand the ball and make things happen when it mattered most.
Yamal’s performance gave him his 40th direct goal involvement of the season, a figure that underlined why Barcelona’s exit quickly shifted attention back to their league campaign. The team still held a nine-point lead at the top of La Liga with seven games remaining and were set to play Celta Vigo at the Spotify Camp Nou next Wednesday.
Henry said that if Yamal keeps working and stays focused, he has the tools to become one of the best players in the world. He also compared the teenager’s boldness to Lionel Messi’s talent, calling Yamal’s mix of confidence, creativity and maturity unique and exciting to watch.
For Barcelona, the bigger picture is simple: their European run is over, and the title race at home now carries the weight of the season. For Yamal, the challenge is no longer whether he can handle the stage. It is how far this version of him can carry the club next.
