Wrexham will be without Zak Vyner and Ben Sheaf when they host Stoke City at the STōK Cae Ras on Saturday, leaving Phil Parkinson short of two players before a match that now carries added weight in the Championship chase. Nathan Broadhead is also a doubt after coming through the defeat to Birmingham City with a tight hamstring.
Parkinson said Vyner will not make the weekend after having a rescan on his groin on Friday, while Sheaf is still not back on the training pitch and has suffered a minor setback. Broadhead, he said, will be assessed very close to kickoff.
The absences come at a difficult time for Wrexham, who are seventh in the table and four points behind Hull City in the final playoff place. They have won only one of their previous five Championship matches and failed to register a single shot on target in last weekend’s loss to Birmingham, a result that exposed how thin the margin has become.
Parkinson tried to soften the blow by confirming Matty James is fine after being limited to 60 minutes at the weekend, but the bigger issue is the shape of a squad that has lost its rhythm. Vyner, a January signing, was brought in to help steady things; instead, Wrexham go into a key home fixture still waiting for bodies to return and for the performance level to rise.
The test against Stoke City now looks less like a routine league date and more like a measure of whether Wrexham can keep pace with the teams above them while carrying injuries and recent poor form. If Broadhead does not recover in time, Parkinson will be forced to reshuffle again, with little room left for another flat afternoon.
