The Fire Weather Watch for northeast Florida was extended through 9 p.m. Monday as dry conditions, critically low humidity and gusty northeast winds kept the region at elevated fire risk. Temperatures in the affected areas were expected to be near or above 90 degrees on Friday and Saturday, adding to the danger.
All counties were included in the watch except eastern Nassau, eastern Duval, St. Johns, Putnam and Flagler, where the threat was lower. The concern is simple and immediate: with NE 15/30 gusts in place, fires could develop and spread quickly as wind carried sparks from one area to another.
Rain chances remained low through the weekend, and temperatures inland were at or below 90 degrees on Friday even as dry conditions continued. One model showed only a slight chance of inland rain on Sunday and again Wednesday, leaving little relief in the short term.
The fire danger is being driven by the same ingredients that make these watches matter most: low humidity, elevated winds, dry ground and near-record heat. The next meaningful chance for heavy rain is not until Sunday, April 26, and Monday, April 27, which means the region will have to get through several more days of tinder-dry weather before conditions begin to ease.
For now, the extended watch answers the central question plainly: the risk is still there, and it is not going away before Monday night.
