returned to the , but the reunion is not going to matter on the floor this spring. He is unlikely to see action in the playoffs, even as Portland prepares for a first-round series against the .

The return still lands with real weight because Lillard is the player who defined Portland for a generation. He led the Trail Blazers to eight consecutive playoff appearances and helped push them to the Western Conference Finals in 2019, when the starting five included , , and . During his first stint in Portland, he also had help from LaMarcus Aldridge, and the franchise is again counting on a new supporting cast to carry the next phase.

That core looks different now. The Blazers are framing their future around Deni Avdija, Donovan Clingan, Toumani Camara and Shaedon Sharpe, with Jrue Holiday, Jerami Grant and Robert Williams III also making an impact. Scoot Henderson has shown signs of promise recently, and Portland finished the regular season with a winning record after ending a four-year playoff drought.

That makes this spring feel both like a breakthrough and a test. Portland passed the Play-In Tournament against the , but the next opponent is far less forgiving. Barely anyone outside Portland is giving the Blazers much of a chance against Victor Wembanyama and the Spurs, which leaves the franchise trying to prove that the progress it made without Lillard can survive the pressure of the postseason.

The more important milestone may be the one that comes next. If Lillard steps foot on the court, it will be in the 2026-27 campaign, when Portland expects him to be part of a deeper roster than the one he left behind.
