Sarah Ferguson has been found at a luxury medical spa in Austria after months in which nobody could locate her. The U.K. tabloid The Sun said this weekend that Ferguson was staying at the Mayrlife Medical Health Resort in Altaussee, a sleepy village of 1,800 people on the shores of a glassy Alpine lake surrounded by snow-capped mountains.
The paper reported that Ferguson was in Room 101, where the rack rate is £2,000 a night, or about $2,700, and that she has barely left her two-bedroom chalet since checking in. Sources close to her cited by The Daily Mail and The Sun said she has been ordering meals through room service, with bresaola ham and mozzarella and chicken breast among her favorite choices. A hairdresser was said to have visited on March 24.
Ferguson, who had lived at Royal Lodge on the Windsor estate for decades before leaving when Andrew was evicted at the beginning of February, had vanished from public view after that move. Her disappearance prompted rumors that placed her in Australia, Argentina, Los Angeles, Dubai and Verbier before she was found in Austria. Princess Beatrice has been speaking to her frequently by phone and has been described as extremely supportive, while Eugenie has also stayed in touch.
The sighting lands at a moment when questions around Ferguson have only grown louder. Friends say she has no shortage of rich supporters, but the idea that she is paying for an Austrian spa break out of her own pocket strains credulity, especially with financial questions still hanging over her, from unpaid bills to talk of a possible memoir deal. In literary circles, the gossip has run from a substantial book deal to a tell-all, or at least a tell-some memoir.
The bigger problem is that the old difficulties never really go away. The Epstein connection remains a continuing source of trouble for Ferguson, and finding her in Austria does little to settle the debate around what she is doing, who is paying, or how long this quiet retreat is meant to last.
