Jake Reiner said he learned from his sister Romy that their father, Rob Reiner, had died, then got another call minutes later saying their mother, Michele Reiner, also was dead. In a Substack post, he said losing both parents at once was his living nightmare.
Reiner said the Dec. 14 calls came after his sister reached him with the news, and that the 45-minute Lyft ride from downtown to the west side felt unendurable as he tried to get to his childhood home and to Romy. He wrote that his world had collapsed and that he was in a trance, focused only on figuring out what had happened.
The deaths happened in the Reiners' home, and in December 2025 Nick Reiner was charged with murder in the killings. He has pleaded not guilty and remains in jail until a criminal trial. Jake Reiner's account adds the family's voice to a case that has already moved from grief to the courtroom, even as the reason for the alleged killings has yet to be answered.
Reiner described his parents as his guiding lights and the foundation of who he is, saying their love for him and his siblings was unconditional. He said he would trade every Dodger game, every Broadway show and every vacation for one more hour to talk with them and say goodbye. For him, the story is no longer only about loss. It is about a family waiting for the facts that can explain how a home became the scene of a double killing.
