Manchester United lined up in a 4-2-3-1 with Chris Kavanagh as referee, as Brentford also went with a 4-2-3-1 at the same kickoff.
Maguire replaced Noussair Mazraoui after serving his suspension, and Patrick Dorgu was named on the bench following the hamstring injury he suffered at Arsenal in January. Shea Lacey was also among the substitutes after strong age-group displays and after playing the day before, giving United extra attacking options from the bench.

United came into the night having all but secured Champions League football for next season, which made the team news more about rhythm and selection than rescue work. Michael Carrick said he wanted Kobbie Mainoo to enjoy himself on the pitch “without giving him too much guidance,” and said Ayden Heaven had the talent and had kept his place after doing so well in the previous game. The contrast was clear enough: Brentford were leaning on continuity and belief, while United were using a near-safe European finish to manage fitness, minutes and momentum.
