Wrobleski allowed four hits and three walks in the first two innings before settling in, and the Dodgers improved to 19-9 with a win that completed a two-game burst over Chicago after ending the Cubs’ 10-game win streak the day before.
Wrobleski finished with six shutout innings, continuing a start to the season that has put his earned-run average at 1.50 through five starts. He said after the game that he is trying to give quality each time out, whether he is throwing well or not, and to keep raising the floor when he does not have his best stuff. Manager Dave Roberts said the young right-hander showed growth by handling stress, limiting damage and looking like a competent pitcher.
The Dodgers gave him room quickly against Shota Imanaga, scoring three times in the first inning. Andy Pages drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, Miguel Rojas added two RBI and Kyle Tucker doubled in the frame for the Cubs, who could not turn the early traffic into a lead. Rojas said the club is feeding off its starting pitching, and that was evident again as Wrobleski gave the bullpen a cushion.
Los Angeles kept adding on from there. Shohei Ohtani hit his first home run in two weeks and later doubled in the fifth inning to snap a streak of six games without an extra-base hit. Dalton Rushing added an RBI single in the sixth, and Tucker scored when Cubs catcher Carson Kelly made an errant pickoff attempt. Relievers Edgardo Henriquez, Jack Dreyer and Kyle Hurt finished the shutout.
The one lineup issue that lingered was Will Smith, who sat for the second straight game because of back tightness. Roberts said the Dodgers were not considering an injured-list move for Smith and hoped he would be back Monday against the Miami Marlins, calling it a case where he could play if needed but the club wanted to give him an extra day.
