Jason Statham is reteaming with David Ayer on John Doe, an action-thriller that will put him in the role of the Man With No Name. Ayer will direct from a script by Zak Penn, with Miramax producing and financing and Black Bear set to introduce the film to international buyers at the Cannes market.
The film follows a man with no memory, no past and no name who remembers only one face: Eliza. As his identity comes back, he learns he was trained for a mission that is still in motion and is now being hunted by the same people who sent him. Production is being lined up to begin in September 2026.
The project extends a run that has already been good business for both the filmmaker-star pairing and the companies backing them. Miramax and Black Bear previously teamed on The Beekeeper, which took in $163 million worldwide, and A Working Man, which grossed $89 million. Statham, whose films have earned more than $8.5 billion at the box office, is also producing through Punch Palace Productions, alongside Paul Schiff and Penn.
Jonathan Glickman said the companies were thrilled to reunite Statham and Ayer on John Doe, describing Penn’s script as sharp and propulsive and saying the film’s action and themes were built for a global audience. John Friedberg called Statham a singular action talent who consistently delivers for viewers, and said Ayer has established himself as one of the top action directors working today, adding that their previous collaborations rank among the most successful independent action movies in recent years.
The timing matters because the teams behind the movie are not betting on a new partnership but on a proven one. Ayer and Statham have already worked together on The Beekeeper and A Working Man, and Miramax is also working with Statham on The Beekeeper 2. Penn, meanwhile, brings a resume that includes The Avengers, Ready Player One, Free Guy, The Incredible Hulk, X2: X-Men United and X-Men: The Last Stand.
For now, the question is not whether the pairing has drawn attention. It is whether John Doe can turn the same commercial formula into another global hit when cameras are scheduled to roll next year.
