and appeared to be down for users on Saturday, cutting off messages and group features for many people trying to sign in and talk. Reports piled up quickly, with more than 1,900 complaints logged on at the time of writing.

Many of the reports centered on server connections, and some users said they were seeing the 0x80004005 error, a code that often points to a sign-in failure or an unsynchronized state. One user said the app would not show messages or let them send any, while another posted, “Parties and messages are down. Seems Xbox is unaware of the issue at the moment…”

No message had been posted by about the outage at the time of writing, and the cause was not known. Based on the number of people affected, the issue appeared likely to be on Xbox’s end rather than with isolated user devices.

The outage hit communication tools more than gameplay itself, leaving some users able to play but unable to reach friends, groups or message threads. For PC players running into the 0x80004005 error, standard fixes include signing out and back in, restarting the console or PC, repairing Gaming Services, updating Windows and the Xbox app, checking date and time settings, or using PowerShell to remove and reinstall gaming services.

That leaves the central problem unchanged for now: users can troubleshoot their own devices, but until Xbox explains what broke, they are left guessing whether this is a platform-wide failure, maintenance or something else entirely.
