Scottie Scheffler will not play next week’s Truist Championship at Quail Hollow Club in North Carolina, pulling out of the PGA Tour Signature Event to focus on defending his PGA Championship title seven days later. His decision gives Rory McIlroy a clearer path at a course where the Northern Irishman has won four times.
The withdrawal matters because the winner’s cheque at the Truist Championship is $3.6million, and McIlroy’s prospects of collecting £2.65million were lifted almost immediately by Scheffler’s absence. Nearly all of the world’s elite players are still expected to tee it up, but Russell Henley, who is eighth globally, is the only other notable absentee alongside Scheffler.
McIlroy knows Quail Hollow better than almost anyone in the field. He won there in 2010, 2015, 2021 and 2024, when the event was still known as the Wells Fargo Championship, and the site has become one of the most reliable venues in his career. That familiarity carries more weight now because he arrives as the reigning back-to-back Masters champion after last month’s historic victory at Augusta National.
That Masters win placed McIlroy among a tiny group in the game’s history. Before him, only Jack Nicklaus, Nick Faldo and Tiger Woods had managed consecutive victories at Augusta National, a standard that underlines how rare his form has been in 2024 and 2025. The Truist field will still be strong, with most of the world’s top 10 entered despite Scheffler’s absence, but the balance of power has shifted.
The tension now sits in the gap between form and timing. Scheffler has chosen the major over the Signature Event, which is sensible on paper, yet it hands McIlroy a better chance to add another title at a course that has treated him unusually well. For Scheffler, the next week is about the PGA Championship. For McIlroy, next week is another chance to make Quail Hollow look like his own place.
