Obinna Ekezie Jr. committed to Louisville on Sunday and said he will reclassify to the current 2026 cycle, putting the 7-foot-0 center on track to join the Cardinals in the summer for the 2026-27 season.
The decision gives Louisville a major frontcourt addition and comes after the Orlando, Florida, native visited the school last week. Ekezie, who weighs 220 pounds and attends Southeastern Prep, is the No. 1 center in the Class of 2027 in On3/Rivals' in-house rankings and, while the 247Sports Composite lists him as the fourth-ranked prospect in the cycle.
The five-star prospect had also taken a visit to Arkansas, and he had been scheduled to visit Michigan this past weekend before that trip was canceled. Instead, he visited BYU, then came back to Louisville and made his choice after seeing the Cardinals one more time. He also held offers from Alabama, Houston, Kentucky, UCLA and others.
Ekezie's rise has been built on production as much as projection. As a junior at Southeastern Prep, he averaged 17.1 points, 7.8 rebounds and 1.8 blocks in 31 games while shooting 60.2 percent from the field. He began his prep career at Fort Lauderdale Prolific Prep before transferring to Southeastern Prep last offseason.
That jump followed a strong sophomore year, when he averaged around 10 points, seven rebounds, three blocks and two assists per game and earned Third-Team MaxPreps Sophomore All-American honors. Louisville was looking to bolster its frontcourt for next season, and Ekezie's commitment addresses that need with a player who already ranks among the most coveted big men in the country. The question now is how quickly he can adjust to a timeline that moves him from the 2027 cycle to helping the Cardinals in 2026-27.
