is bringing back five contestants from Season 5 on May 4 to mark the 20th anniversary of the 2006 run, and will be part of the reunion. Hicks won that season, finishing ahead of and , and he is returning alongside , and Bucky Covington.

The reunion lands with the kind of nostalgia the show has chased before, but this one has a simple hook: the class of 2006 is back in the same place, two decades after it turned a summer competition into a national obsession. For Hicks, the appearance closes a long loop on the season that made him a winner and a familiar name to viewers who watched him outlast McPhee and Yamin for the title.

Yamin, who took third place, brings a different kind of afterstory. His single “Wait for You” reached No. 13 on the , he has since released several solo albums, most recently in 2015, and he now provides vocals for the . He was also a vocalist in Philthy before that, part of a career that kept moving even as his hearing loss and health battles stayed in the background.

He has said he is 90% deaf in his right ear, and he was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when he was 16 years old. Yamin has spoken candidly about how hard that was to absorb. “I was in denial,” he said of the diagnosis. “I didn’t understand how I could just go from one day being a healthy kid to all of a sudden having to cope with such a meticulous, incurable disease.” He added, “The road for me was very tough at first.”

The friction in this reunion is the one most family TV milestones try to smooth over: time changes the story. Hicks is still the winner, but Yamin’s path may be the more revealing one because it shows how far the show’s alumni had to travel after the cameras stopped rolling. In 2023, Karen Cruz praised him on Father’s Day and he returned the gesture on Mother’s Day, writing, “Thank you for being such a loving and present Dad to our CC,” while Cruz described him as “Beautiful. Strong. Caring. Selfless. Thoughtful. Funny. Smart. Stylish. That’s Karen Cruz in a nutshell.”

That makes the May 4 reunion more than a celebration of a season. It is a reset point for a group of singers whose careers did not stop in 2006, and for Hicks it is a return to the moment that made him American Idol’s Season 5 champion.
