Chris Brown unveiled the cover art for his new album Brown, and the image set off an immediate wave of Michael Jackson comparisons online on April 30, 2026. The artwork shows Brown in a tan suit leaning on his elbow on a carpet, a pose that prompted jokes and side-by-side references to classic pop and R&B imagery.
Among the responses were comments from social media users who leaned hard into the Jackson comparisons. One user, kenzie ʚɞ, wrote that Brown was “YEARNINGGGG,” added, “DO NOT BUY THRILLER FROM TEMU YALLL,” and mocked the look as “27 tracks wit the MJ pose he finna drop FILLER.” Another post from the same account said he “wanna be a michael son sooo bad its embarrassing 😭😭😭😭,” while Sedgrick called him “the most boring person to ever enter art” and said nothing about the image was subversive.
The cover also drew comparisons to Lionel Richie’s single You Are, Luther Vandross’ Give Me the Reason and Teddy Pendergrass’ It’s Time for Love, putting Brown in the center of a familiar argument about homage, influence and imitation. The album arrives ahead of Brown’s upcoming joint tour with Usher, and the pair have named the run The R&B Tour: Raymond & Brown. The Live Nation-produced tour is scheduled to begin in June and continue through December, while Brown’s twelfth studio album is due next Friday, May 8.
Brown has been leaning into his status as an R&B musician as of late, and the timing of the cover art only sharpened that focus. He also recently welcomed his first child with model Jada Wallace, adding another layer of public attention as he prepares for the album release and the tour. The question now is not whether the comparisons will fade — it is whether Brown is using the old-school references to frame Brown as a deliberate R&B statement, and the rollout already says that is the direction he wants the conversation to go.
