Prime Video has tapped Imogen Poots and John Reynolds to lead its eight-episode adaptation of Sex Criminals, the comic about a woman and a man who can stop time when they have sex. Poots will play Suze, while Reynolds will play Jon, and the pair end up robbing banks after discovering they share the same gift.
The project brings the 2013 Image Comics title to streaming after the comic was written by Matt Fraction and illustrated by Chip Zdarsky. Emily V. Gordon, Kumail Nanjiani and Tze Chun co-created the series and will serve as showrunners and executive producers, with the show coming from them, LuckyChap and Amazon MGM Studios. Nanjiani is also set to appear in the series.
The casting gives the adaptation its lead pairing and makes clear what kind of story Prime Video is betting on: a comic-book romance with a criminal streak and a high-concept twist. Poots and Reynolds are the faces of the series now, and the rest of the pitch is already built around that premise.
The open question is how far the streaming version will push the comic’s offbeat setup, but the answer is already embedded in the order of the announcements. Prime Video is not treating Sex Criminals as a niche curiosity. It is moving ahead with a full series and two leads in place.
