Capt. was supposed to fly his final trip with , but the carrier shut down before he could take off. Instead, he came home as a passenger on a Southwest flight with his son , and what began as a missed retirement trip ended with a water cannon salute in Baltimore.

Chris, who works as a Southwest first officer, told the pilots during the flight that the trip should have been his father’s retirement send-off. The crew then coordinated with , a Southwest dispatcher, to put together a surprise after landing. When the aircraft reached Baltimore, fire and rescue crews welcomed it with a traditional water cannon salute, and a ground team was waiting at the gate with cheers and a bottle of champagne.

A gate agent stepped forward and announced, “Ladies and gentlemen, Mr. Jon Jackson,” before handing over the bottle. Jackson took in the scene and said, “Very overwhelming. I can’t thank you all enough. As Spirit goes down, this is a sad day, and you guys made it incredible. Thank you so much.”

The tribute stood out because it came from a rival airline, and because it turned one day that had started with disappointment into something Jackson will not soon forget. Spirit’s abrupt shutdown left his planned final flight on the ground, but Southwest employees and crews made sure his retirement send-off still happened, just in a different uniform and in a different city.
