A pair of fronts and strong upper-level winds helped trigger scattered severe thunderstorms across the southern Plains and into the Gulf Coast states on Thursday afternoon and evening, with Oklahoma City squarely in the area of concern. Forecasters said the main threats were large hail and damaging winds, and they did not rule out an isolated tornado.
The Storm Prediction Center placed southeastern Kansas, central and eastern Oklahoma and northern Texas under a Slight Risk, and issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for southeast Kansas, western-northern Texas and much of central to eastern Oklahoma. Tulsa, Oklahoma City, Ardmore and Chanute were all inside the watch, where scattered hail up to 2 inches across and wind gusts as high as 75 mph were possible.
That setup mattered because it put some of the region’s biggest cities in the path of storms during the afternoon and evening hours, when severe weather can turn quickly. In Oklahoma and north Texas, a cold front sinking southward and a pool of cooler air aloft were the ingredients that helped storms fire across the Plains, while another band of unsettled weather stretched from eastern Texas to northern Florida.
There was also a second zone of concern farther southeast, where a nearly stalled front and upper-air energy moving eastward supported a few gusty thunderstorms from eastern Texas to northern Florida. Houston, New Orleans, Jackson, Mobile and Tallahassee were among the cities at risk for a strong to locally severe thunderstorm that afternoon. The broad pattern showed a sharp divide: the southern Plains faced the best chance for hail and wind, while the Gulf Coast corridor dealt with more scattered but still potentially disruptive storms.
For Oklahoma City, the headline risk was straightforward: the severe weather was close enough to demand attention, but the main hazards were the kind that can hit fast and leave damage in a narrow path. With a watch in place and the possibility of 2-inch hail and 75 mph wind gusts, the next few hours were the window that mattered most.
