Brandon Lockridge was out of the lineup Monday against the Cardinals as the Brewers welcomed Jackson Chourio back from the injured list and reset their outfield alignment. Chourio started in left field in his 2026 debut, with Garrett Mitchell and Sal Frelick filling the other two outfield spots.
The move marked a sharp turn for Lockridge, who had received fairly steady playing time in the Milwaukee outfield throughout the season. With Chourio back, Lockridge appeared set to move into more of a short-side platoon role moving forward.
That change matters because Milwaukee’s outfield had been one of the steadier parts of the lineup while Chourio was sidelined, and Lockridge had become a regular part of the rotation. Once Chourio returned on Monday, the Brewers immediately placed him back into the center of the picture, pushing Lockridge toward a narrower role.
The tension for Lockridge is obvious. He had earned consistent at-bats through the season, but the roster shift leaves him facing a different reality now that Chourio is healthy. Monday’s lineup was the first clear sign that the Brewers intend to restore Chourio’s place without waiting long to sort out the rest of the outfield mix.
For Lockridge, the next step is less about a single game and more about how often Milwaukee can find him work against certain matchups. For the Brewers, the question is whether this alignment holds once the lineup settles around Chourio’s return.
