The first pictures of the Kentucky Derby 2026 contenders are out, and they point toward a full field when the race is run May 2 at Churchill Downs. America’s Best Racing has compiled its annual spring slideshow of 3-year-olds on target for the Kentucky Derby Presented by , a visual guide to the horses expected to make up the gate.

The lineup is expected to include the winners of the , Wood Memorial Stakes Presented by , Toyota Blue Grass Stakes, Arkansas Derby, Curlin Florida Derby Presented by , Twinspires.com Louisiana Derby, Jeff Ruby Steaks, San Felipe Stakes Presented by and ESMARK Tampa Bay Derby, along with a trio of International contenders. The contenders are shown in order by points earned in the Road to the Kentucky Derby scoring system, giving the spring photo collection a quick read on who has accumulated the most ground toward the 1 ¼-mile race.

Commandment is identified in the slideshow as the Florida Derby winner, while Further Ado is listed as the Blue Grass Stakes winner and Renegade as the Arkansas Derby winner. When available, the images include profile shots, workout photos and racing pictures, which is the practical part of the package: it lets fans see how the front-runners look before the racing world turns fully to Louisville. The Kentucky Derby is the first jewel of the Triple Crown, and the spring snapshot now suggests the race is moving from speculation to structure, with the list of expected starters already starting to harden.

That still leaves the usual Derby uncertainty. A full field of 20 is expected, but the final gate will not be settled until the last points are claimed and the last qualifiers decide whether they are in or out. For now, the slideshow does what spring previews are supposed to do: it names the horses, shows their faces and tells readers which contenders have already done enough to be part of the conversation in May.
