Anthony Edwards injured his knee in Game 4 against the Denver Nuggets, and the Timberwolves said Monday he will be considered week-to-week after an MRI showed a left knee hyperextension injury and bone bruise.
The team is preparing to play without Edwards for the time being, and there is a very good chance he will not return for the remainder of the playoff series. That is a major blow for Minnesota, which was also set to be without Donte DiVincenzo after he suffered a torn Achilles tendon in Game 4, leaving the Timberwolves' starting backcourt sidelined at the same time.
Edwards' injury came in the middle of a tight series against Denver, and the timing makes it especially difficult for Minnesota because the postseason calendar leaves little room for recovery. The team said further updates on his progress will be provided when available, but the language around the injury already points to a long absence rather than a quick return.
Chris Finch offered a sliver of hope if the series drags on. “We do know that if we keep extending this playoff series, he is going to come back. And he generally comes back ahead of the timeline,” Finch said. That leaves the Timberwolves waiting on the one player they can least afford to lose, with Game 6 status now tied as much to the series length as to Edwards' own recovery.
